Aitken (surname)
Aitken is a surname of Scottish origin. It meaning derives from the term family of Adam (from Adam and Eve). The base of the Aitken family was Ayrshire but the name soon took hold in Lanarkshire and Stirlingshire. It was never a clan as such but did have its own seat of power. It is also one of the few family names that has direct connection with all the ancient Scottish Kings. At the time of the British Census of 1881[1], its frequency was highest in Peeblesshire (23.6 times the British average), followed by Linlithgowshire, Haddingtonshire, Stirlingshire, Fife, Dunbartonshire, Clackmannanshire, Shetland, Edinburghshire and Ayrshire.
